Gil Hardy is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Nutrition in Auckland
New Zealand. He trained as a biochemist in the UK where he
carried out research in the Metabolic Research Laboratory of
Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Sir Hans Krebs at the University
of Oxford. Working with colleagues at St Marks Hospital,
London he developed the first 3 litre Parenteral Nutrition bag for
patients with intestinal failure. Professor Hardy has over 250
publications from his extensive research with lipids, glutamine,
micronutrients and most recently chyme reinfusion therapy.
Gil is a founder and life member of the British Pharmaceutical
Nutrition Group and has served on Councils of BAPEN, the UK
and New Zealand Nutrition Societies and as vice president of
AuSPEN. He has been associated with ESPEN and ASPEN
since their formation, most recently on the Research,
Membership and FASPEN committees of ASPEN and remains
a faculty member of ESPEN. He has an international reputation
in the field of pharmaceutical and clinical nutrition with awards
and honorary fellowships from Asia, Australasia, Europe, Latin
America and USA, including the Distinguished International
Nutrition Support Specialist Award from ASPEN in 2014. Gil
was the founder and first chairman of the international clinical
nutrition section (ICNS) and in 2020 he was appointed to the
ASPEN Board of Directors. He represents ASPEN on the
International Human Rights for Clinical Nutrition working group
and was recently appointed to the board of the West African
